Silver Jubilee for Dorothy Henderson Lodge
Our residents and staff at BaptistCare Dorothy Henderson Lodge were host to a crowd of well-wishers in March 2018, as they celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the trusted aged care centre in Sydney’s Macquarie Park.
The event was attended by current and former BaptistCare staff, with special guests Dr Graham Henderson, Mr Kenneth Henderson and Mrs Anne Low, the children of the late Mrs Dorothy Henderson, after whom the centre was named.
Guests were treated to recollections from former staff as well as long-time resident Mr Alf Bourne, who spoke of the welcoming home that Dorothy Henderson Lodge has been for him and his fellow residents.
When it opened in 1993, Dorothy Henderson Lodge was the eleventh ‘hostel for the aged’ established by Baptist Community Services (BCS), as we were then known. The 74 place hostel was so-named by unanimous decision from the Executive Committee in recognition of Dorothy’s long, dedicated and untiring service to the organisation.
In consenting to lending her name to the new building, Dorothy did so as recognition of the many ladies who served alongside her.

A Month Of Music And One Year Celebrations
Mariachi musicians, Mexican dancers and churros kicked off a month of music at our newest aged care centre, The Gracewood Centre in Sydney’s north west, at the beginning of August.
Our residents enjoyed the toe tapping and spirited performance of Sydney’s premier Mariachi Band, led by guitarist and singer, Hector Patricio.
The Gracewood Centre’s Music Melody Month saw residents enjoy a host of musical performances throughout the days and evenings, as part of our ongoing music therapy program.
The centre also celebrated it’s one-year birthday in February 2018, after it opened with full occupancy. Residents, staff and guests came together for an Italian-themed celebration, complete with wood fire pizzas, gelato and an Opera singer who performed the classics.

Redeveloped Niola Enters New Era
After 16 months of redevelopment, we officially opened our new look $11million Niola Centre with a street festival and unveiling by Parkes Shire Mayor, Cr Ken Keith in late November 2017, 60 years after the centre was first opened.
The day-long street festival invited the community to share in the celebrations, complete with children’s entertainment and rides, live music, street and gourmet food stalls, an antique car display, a live broadcast from local radio station and tours of the new centre.
The redevelopment increased Niola’s capacity to care for residents living with dementia with a specialised unit versed in the most cutting-edge strategies in dementia care.
The redevelopment also included an additional seven beds, taking Niola to a 59 bed centre; all four bed wards replaced with new double and single rooms, each with ensuites; a completely new commercial kitchen, providing freshly-cooked meals, alongside of overall upgrades to the Centre’s technology care systems.
Residents now have access to a larger chapel space, dedicated hair salon, a spa room featuring a state-of-the-art hydro therapy spa bath; and new physio and consulting rooms for healthcare professionals.
BaptistCare purchased Niola, formerly a bush hospital, as a 12-bed home in 1957.

Dying With Loving Words
BaptistCare’s annual Palliative Care in Aged Care Conference, held in May 2018, featured some of Australia’s most respected speakers, thinkers and practitioners in the field, sharing latest practices, innovative thinking and inspiration with conference guests.
The conference also included the launch of our new book, titled ‘Dying with Loving Words’, aimed at helping and equipping families and carers to connect and communicate with their loved ones.
The book, a collection of prayers, poems and reflections, was inspired by the experiences of care workers, chaplains and families who were looking for a single source of inspiration for the words to speak, the comfort to share and a means of expressing love during the most sacred and precious end of life.
At BaptistCare, we believe palliative care is much more than tasks to be accomplished; and is about recognising the precious value of time spent together.

Reunited With First Nursing Cape
BaptistCare Niola’s longstanding and beloved Matron, Marjery Field, was surprised with a special gift in June when her family visited to present and reunite her with her original nurses cape.
The framed cape, including a photo of Marjery wearing the cape in her earlier nursing days, will be displayed at Niola for the enjoyment of residents and staff alike.
Marjery became a resident at Niola Centre in 2017, and is all too familiar with the history of the site, having been the first Matron of Niola when it was purchased by BaptistCare in 1957.

HopeEnterprises Employment Training Program
Men and women completing traineeships as part of our HopeEnterprises Employment Training Program (ETP) have had a successful year, with 24 trainees completing training and entering the workforce.
Our trainees undertook training and found work in areas such as cleaning, gardens and lawns, community services and aged care hospitality, as well as administration and maintenance roles.
HopeEnterprises, launched in 2015, is a social enterprise that seeks to break the cycle of social and financial disadvantage for people with complex needs, who have difficulty entering the workforce. The program creates a pathway to employment, assisting people who may have experienced long-term unemployment, homelessness, domestic violence, addiction, time in gaol, and those living with mental illness.
We provide traineeships in cleaning services, gardening and lawn services (horticulture), maintenance and repairs, hospitality, accommodation services, and aged care.
Our program also saw four high school students, who were disengaged and at-risk of expulsion, work through a school-based apprenticeship. While finishing their final year of high school the students undertook a horticultural traineeship with the Canberra Institute of Technology. On completion the students will have a certificate II in their trade, which they can continue after finishing school, and sets them up for a positive future with qualifications they’re passionate about.

Hope Lives Here
For over 34 years, HopeStreet in Sydney’s inner city has been putting faith into action, reaching out to people who are in need, many who are struggling with homelessness, addiction, mental health and legal issues, in addition to having diminished employment opportunities.
In February 2018, the HopeStreet identity, established and grown at Woolloomooloo, was expanded across our Community Centres. Each of our Community Centres provide unique services that meet the local needs of disadvantaged communities and people living on the margins. The expansion of the HopeStreet brand affirms the uniqueness of each of our Community Centres and the communities they operate in.
From access to fair finance and affordable food, homelessness support, domestic and family violence services, and working with women who are marginalised, HopeStreet offers trusted support and hope to people living with disadvantage and distress.
Expanding the HopeStreet brand allows all of BaptistCare’s community services to have consistency in branding and identity, wherever they are located, while increasing our capacity for storytelling, which is so important for those who are supporting the work we do.
All of our HopeStreet sites are located on a newly launched HopeStreet website, which is supported by a quarterly HOPE newsletter, bursting with hope-giving stories featuring the people and communities we are working with. We hope you will join us in supporting the vital work that BaptistCare HopeStreet is doing, right across NSW.

Women’s Space Opens
Our new HopeStreet Women’s Centre was officially opened in Darlinghurst in January 2018, with the help of the Minister for Family and Community Services, Minister for Social Housing, Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Pru Goward.
The new Women’s Centre has been designed as a safe space where marginalised women in Sydney’s inner city can access free and confidential professional support.
Women, including transgender women, will be able to access a range of practical services including workshops and skills-based classes, drop-in support, counselling and case management, safe-sex kits and food support, assistance to access health and government services and access to exit pathways.
The Centre was designed in collaboration with clients of BaptistCare HopeStreet Women’s Services, who contributed to the look and the feel of the space to help create a sense of belonging and ownership.

Third Halo Ball Puts Spotlight On Children
On a clear autumn evening with harbour lights glistening on the water and a buzz of excitement in the air, over 500 guests were welcomed to our third annual Halo Ball in May 2018.
The important fundraising event, held at Doltone House Darling Island Wharf in Pyrmont, encouraged guests to recognise the often voiceless victims of domestic and family violence: the children.
A film shining a spotlight on the experience of children was launched at the event, where guests raised a staggering $140,000. These funds are vital in enabling BaptistCare to continue delivering critical front line services like the Break Free program which provides support, early intervention and counselling for children.
The Ball was supported by Channel Ten’s Sandra Sully as MC, and headlined by Australia’s musical treasure, Marcia Hines.
The 2019 Halo Ball will be held at The Westin Sydney on Friday 3 May. Individuals or organisations would like to register their interest as a guest or sponsor can contact events@baptistcare.org.au
